You Show Me Yours and I’ll Show You Mine

By Thomas Sheerin As much as employers complain of the difficulty finding good employees, few have embraced a formula that assures success. The greater the difficulty finding good employees in your industry, or certain positions within that industry, the greater the need to view the relationship as a partnership. With these employees observe the Golden Rule, treat them as you expect to be treated. If you extend this principle to compensation, weighing what youd hope to receive in their positions at the expense of some of your profits, youll see the problem disappear. But arent employees with skill sets more common entitled to their share of the Golden Rule, partially setting issues of compensation aside. After all, the complaint that good employees are scarce extends throughout the economy. Shouldnt the relationship between employer and employee be similar to that of customer and supplier? Its an even exchange, work for pay. Do we unthinkingly accept that the employer has something people want, jobs, therefore their position is superior. If this is truly the way things are, then employers should stop complaining about difficulty finding good employees. It would logically follow from this that there is an overabundance of good employees. But employers need good employees as much as people need jobs. So lets stop the fiction that theyre practically performing an act of charity when they make a hire. But this reality of mutual need is blurred before you even summit a resume. Ads frequently state, drug test required. There are public policy reasons for some of this, depending on the industry, and the Government has viewed this as a part of its war on drugs for some time. However, often the employer will force you to take a drug screen as a condition of employment without justification. If nothing in your past indicates drug use or abuse, drug screens should be reserved for behaviors on the job that indicate a potential problem. But what of the training costs you ask. We dont want to devote those resources to someone only to find out months later he or she is a drug abuser. Ok. Ill accept that without argument.. But you, the employee, has probably left a job to accept this new position. In keeping with my thesis that the relationship is mutually imperative to each party, wouldnt it be nice if you knew before leaving your current job that the boss wouldnt be subject to fits of erratic outbursts. The results of the test determine whether or not the employer wants you on the team, wouldnt a clean sample provided by the boss make an employment offer more attractive? You could put your mind at ease over mercurial behavior that would make your work life miserable. Besides, a boss with psychological problems can create more havoc in your life than the reverse. This thought came to me while I was working for a family who were all subject to terrible mood swings. Screaming and yelling would be followed by an arm around the shoulder in the blink of an eye. One day I received a list of the psychotropic medications prescribed to the patients in the facility. The person in the office next to mine came to see what had caused my outburst of laughter. After dismissing it as nothing, I felt the satisfaction you gain when a mystery dissolves. At the bottom of the list were the names of the owners, obviously receiving their prescriptions from the doctor in residence, who was of course in their employ. The mood altering drugs prescribed to them, many anti-anxiety, were far above what any of the other patients received, and this was a facility with a large psychiatric population. After consulting the PDR, I wondered how they maintained verticality during the day. Evidently they had developed a tolerance for those pills, but for little else. Is this situation out of the ordinary? Probably. But Id like to see some data indicating employees are statistically more prone to drug abuse than their managers before accepting the current state of affairs as reasonable. Psychological testing, popular with some employers, should be mutual as well. Ive known my share of managers who insisted you share their roller coaster of emotions, without presenting a ticket during the interview. Finally, this insistence that we negate the strict mutuality of the employer-employee relationship, illustrates something thats always puzzled me while reading HR advice in the trades. It is often stressed that a potential employee should be scrupulously honest while interviewing for a position. Sounds reasonable. But if theyre advising employers to do the same, Ive missed those articles. How often have you found the organization to be as advertised after a short while on the job? I once had 2 people, an HR Manager and Assistant Administrator, tell me on my first day, after leaving a position Id be in a considerable number of years, that it was their way or the highway. During the interviewing process, they were falling all over themselves to convince me to join the ranks. It was obvious within my first week that much of their presentation had been a lie. Im sure had I been provided with psychological profiles or urine samples of the duo beforehand, I would have declined the offer. But of course, they had a right to see mine, while I only had the right to hope for the best. By Don Monteith Your job is to rise ABOVE the challenge. Do more than is expected. Say nothing negative about anyone or anything. Yes, that is easier said than done for most of us. Still, it is simply good advice for all. You never have to watch your backside when there are no boomerangs returning. DRIVE A NAIL Just today I was reading about a Dad who made his son drive a nail into the fence every time his temper flared. After about 37 nails hammered into the fence the young fellow decided to curtail his outbursts. Every time the son contained his temper Dad let him go to the fence and pull out a nail. For a moment, lets look at the fence together. What do you see? Thats right, an unsightly fence with lots of holes in it. Point is our outburst or tantrums. criticisms or put-downs. will always leave lasting holes/scars. Most of us have wishes and regrets in the past. Probably wish we could retract those unkind words unfurled in a moment of anger. Cant do it! Permanent for all to see. Gossip is hurtful too. Sometimes its real juicy stuff. Then it gains momentum. Next person kinda embellishes the details. Reputations can be ruined for no reason. Did you know? Too often the person asking the question does NOT know either but thinks they have the lowdown in full detail. Cant wait to tell ALL the juicy details so “they” can pass along to more people, then others, plus some. WHATS THE POINT Business is built on TRUST. Confidentially. Integrity. Faithfulness. Your office staff also has to treat each other with respect IF you want success. There is NO place for gossip in your business. No place for anyone to share juicy tidbits heard at the water cooler. Even about the boss or the secretary to the chief is off-limits. Walk away from it. Dont be a party to anything negative. Live your life in the positive and never look back. Your esteem will be intact. Feel good about yourself and see the best in those around you. Work hard at whatever you do. Hopefully the work ethic was instilled in you at an early age. Often times a mother and/or father work two and sometimes three jobs to make ends meet. Sacrifices are made for the family to make provisions for their welfare. With determination many mountains have MOVED. There are NO glass ceilings for those who are unwilling to be blocked. An old saying is a rising tide lifts all boats and there is every reason for YOU to be upon the rising tide. Bring others along with you. Shatter the glass ceiling. Many a company owner or CEO has risen beyond the limits. College degree required? Race? Sex? Age? None of these can stop the charger who knows no defeat. RISE ABOVE THE LOSERS Discrimination gets blamed as an easy excuse. Sometimes it does happen. But if you work hard and can clearly demonstrate your talent and expertise the hold down ropes give way. Nothing can resist the charge of relentless determination. You see Montel Williams with his own TV talk show. Did it just happen? Trace his story through a Naval Officer career. See his childhood with Mom and Dad who worked 2 and 3 jobs to support their family. He had good role models. Many others like Montel Williams have risen to celebrity status through sheer determination to succeed. To be and to become the best they can be in their field of choice. Negotiating deals. Asking questions. You need to ask. How is my life going to be different? Am I willing to accept the challenges involved? How long will I have to study in the field of choice? (4) Can I gain the respect of my peers? Learning is a major part of excelling at any job. You need to be well versed in all aspects of your business. Reading industry publications. Participating in Seminars. Going to conventions with the industry giants. Become known as a contributor to the welfare of your group. Remind yourself that you are the ONLY one that can define who you are. Dont let someone else do it for you. Never compromise your character to appease others. Define your own limits, strengths and abilities. Remember the man who built a house with cheap materials? Tried to cut corners to save money. Make more profit for himself. When he finished building the house it turned out to be a gift to his family from his boss. Our biblical admonition is worth repeating. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you (even if NO ONE is looking!). Build your product or provide your service as if it were for you. Maybe your boss will do something special for you, too. If you own the business, then recognize that YOUR boss is at home waiting! ACTION TIP: Your own integrity drives your actions. It matters not whether someone is looking. Control your temper at all times. Gossip not. Repeat only good ideas or thoughts about others. Live your life in the positive. Overcomers have no handicaps. By Tony Abbis Last week I blogged about a StatsCanada report that noted that the participation rate of women in the workforce was declining, which is a sudden reversal of a decades long trend. This trend was sharpest in Alberta and StatsCanada opined that the availability of day care spaces for children may have been a contributing factor. The Montreal Gazette is carrying an article today that reports that Quebec women are actually increasing labour force participation rates and provides a couple of possible explanations as to why women in other provinces are choosing to leave the workforce. while the percentage of working-age Canadian women in the job market their participation rate began to fall only last year, it has been dropping in the U.S. since the late 1990s. Some American observers attribute the phenomenon to a new wave of social conservatism. Its unclear if this might be a factor in Alberta. This is an important finding, says Prem Benimadhu, a vice-president at the Conference Board of Canada. Benimadhu believes that demands on employees have become toxic in recent years. He thinks that some married women, particularly those waiting to start a family, are starting to find personal interests more attractive than extra income. The increase in participation rates of women was seen as one partial solution to labour shortages caused by the retirement of the baby-boomers, so expect to read more speculation about this over the coming months. An upswing in social conservatism, toxic workplaces and day-care issues may all be contributing to the trend of declining participation rates in the labour force among women - but if we really want to know why women are leaving the workforce maybe we should just ask them. The creature was reported being as big as a large calf or young cow, it was covered with a fur that was reddish, the head was big and wolf-like, and more brown than the rest of the body, the jaws were always gaping, ears short and straight, chest white and very broad, tail very long and thick with the tip white, the back paws very big and long, according to some having hooves like a horse, those of the front were shorter and covered with a long fur, having six claws to each paw. Once when the creature was sighted crossing a river, it raised itself on its hind legs and waded over like a human being. Furthermore it was very agile and extremely strong. It was sometimes sighted in locations very far apart on the same day. When hunting it crawled almost with its belly to the ground. One shepherd claimed it could stand up on its rear legs and was strong enough to lift an adult sheep with its arms. Dogs fled in terror from it as did most other animals. The creature often made a sound more like a horse neighing than a wolf howling, but sometimes it would make a growling sound like those of a mean dog, or one in pain or distress. There were two mysterious cases reported during the times of the creatures attacks. Three women were going to church near the wood of Favart, when a dark man offered to escort them through the woods. They refused and before leaving he touched one of them with a fur-covered hand. Soldiers arriving on the scene just after the incident warned the terrified women not to go into the woods, because the creature had just been seen there. Two women of Escures also on the way to church had a similar experience in an area where, unknown to them, the creature had just been seen by several people. This time they saw that the man accosting them was covered in fur only when his shirt blew open in the wind. It was said at the time the creature was called an instrument of the Devil, and besides killing, was trying to stop people from going to Mass. One can certainly see the spiritual connection to the beast if we are to believe the stories of the meetings that occurred between the women and the strange man, who had fur covering him. Since spiritual creatures can assume any form, it would of been nothing to change from the wolf-life beast into the form of something humans would of not found so scary, only to change back into the beast once inside the dark woods. One reason the creature would of done this is the following. I have read numerous times when there has been an encounter with a ghost or demon in a haunted location, the spirtiual being draws energy off their victims or those near them. The women would of became frightened easily once inside the dark woods, especially when they would of noticed the man was covered with fur, etc. Once they became scared and released their psychic energy given off in fear, the creature could drain and use this energy to change and keep it’s varied forms more easily, like a demon or ghost does when it drains energy from frightened people. Making them is so easy that you can make your own bridal pomander for your wedding. Here are 3 simple steps to making a bridal pomander. Step 1 : Prepare the floral foam. Cut a block of floral foam into a 2″ x 2″ cube. Soak it in water. When it is soaked, wrap the cube with chicken wire. The purpose of the chicken wire is to hold the flowers after they are inserted. Step 2 : Prepare the pomander handle. Beautiful and decorative ribbons are normally used as the pomander handle. Cut about 1 metre of ribbon and secure the end at the chicken wire. Use your creativity to create unique pomander handles. Instead of using a ribbon,make a strand of pearls or beads of matching colours to your flowers to use as the handle. This will form the basic shape of the pomander.Continue adding the roses compactly around the foam. While doing that, make sure that the round shape is maintained. Make sure also that the foam is well covered with flowers and not exposed. In a pomander, the flowers must be compact and close to each other. And that’s it. Your bridal pomander is done. Why not visualize your perfect body – thin and fit and toned? As you visualize your perfect body at your ideal weight, you are actually creating it. In accordance with the Law of Attraction, the process for attracting and creating your ideal body is the same as for attracting and creating anything you desire – focus on what you want until you bring it into being. As you visualize yourself thin, voila, you will be thin! Become a Magnet for Your Perfect Body. Visualization is such a powerful process because your subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between something that is real and something that is vividly imagined. As you visualize yourself thin, you become a vibrational match to your desire – you actually become a magnet for a thin body. As you consistently imagine yourself thin, you are creating that exact image. Visualization is the key to intentional creation. Because your mind thinks in pictures and images, as you visualize, you are programming your subconscious mind. As you create a clear mental picture of the body of your dreams, you are employing the power of visualization to manifest the body of your dreams. See the way you look, feel, act, and speak. See what exhilarating activities you’re engaged in and see who you’re enjoying them with. See and feel your body with great emotion exactly the way you want it to be. Imprint this picture in your mind. After a few minutes of intensely experiencing your desire, take a deep breath and slowly open your eyes. Hold The Vision of Your Perfect Body. Two excellent times to visualize are as you’re drifting off to sleep at night and as you’re waking up in the morning. In those times, you’re in a state of allowing – relaxed and focused inward. It’s helpful to continue to visualize throughout the day as well. When you continue to see yourself as a thin person, your subconscious mind will move you into actions that align with the vision you hold. Replay this mental image every chance you get. Test the potential marketplace to identify the buying motives and identify any problems that may interfere with your plan. 2. Develop alternative solutions to any problems. 3. Define what type group of the market that you are going to test. 4. Plan what you are going to do with the information. Application life cycle consists of: 1. Introduction A. Are we increasing our sales according to plan? B. When will we achieve break-even? 2. Growth A. Are we losing, holding or increasing sales? B. Are we increasing profit margin? 3. Maturity A. Any new uses that can re-stimulate demand? B. Any other networks that can be utilized? 4. Decline A. Should we abandon the market? B. Is our lead cost per sale increasing beyond boundaries? Marketing mistakes most commonly made: 1. Allowing yourself to be blinded by your love affair with your widget. 2. Lack of communication on all levels. 3. Making overestimates of: a. Performance b. Exterior conditions (inflation, interest rates, supply, govt) c. Close rates 4. Making underestimates of: a. Time necessary to accomplish b. The in-efficiencies of start-up c. This is “fine-tuning” and “after- market.” This is a very simple yet important part of your business. Research I - After creating a promotion, using The Marketing Workbook, approach the appropriate market with your promotion, preferably face-to-face. The goal is to determine: 1. What do they like about your offer? 2. What do they not like about your offer? 3. How much will they pay for it, as is? 4. How can you improve over Brand X? 5. How much more would they pay for “value added?” 6. How often (or when) would they buy? 7. What would you need to offer to get them to switch? Take this invaluable feedback and re-invent your wheel. Research II - According to the CUSTOMERS: 1. How is your value? 2. How can you improve it? 3. How is your dependability 4. How can you improve it? 5. What additional services does the market want? 6. What do they like about your competition? 7. What do they not like about your competition? Scenario “I” is for a start-up (either a new business, or a new service from an existing one). Research “II” should be asked of both existing customers and “Brand X” customers. People will positively respond to genuine research questions because it makes them feel “special.” Don’t abuse the situation by manipulating them into an “instant sale.” Get back to them. Remember, you don’t tell a market what to do - you ask what it is that they want. Don’t listen to people who will tell you what they believe you want to learn, go to strangers.
