Cell Phones Evolve And So Do The Worries

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Donna_Johnson_Edwards]Donna Johnson Edwards When I was a youngster I was among a very few latchkey kids in our neighborhood, but today, according to the Census Bureau, at least seven million latchkey children return to an empty house on any given afternoon. Most of us with latchkey kids have created a list of rules for them to follow, covering topics such as snacks, strangers at the door, phone calls, etc. They are pretty much the same ones our parents outlined for us as kids. But today, we have a growing list of additional worries to address, such as television programs, video games, computer programs such as instant messaging, and use of the Internet. A couple of years ago, my daughter was old enough to walk to her grandmothers house after school. I wrestled with the idea, but finally conceded that she was responsible and mature enough to handle the three-block trek on her own. There were some days when an after school activity she forgot to tell us about delayed her and caused everyone to worry. And sometimes even her grandmother lost track of time and wasnt there to greet her. We decided that she might be better off with a cell phone. I searched the Internet and found out what lots of experts and other parents had to say on the topic. I contacted her school to learn what their rules were regarding cell phones and then created a list of our own rules. She is required to leave the cell phone off during school hours and has a cutoff time each school night for all phone calls. She is allowed to make long-distance calls to her friends on weekends and can talk as long as she wants providing her chores and homework are done. She got a camera phone and has had some fun taking photos of her dogs and friends. All in all, she has done a good job of managing the responsibility. The only problems we have are that she is constantly losing her charger, forgetting to recharge and forgetting to turn on the phone when she should. Hum, sounds just like some adults I know! But I digress! I remember the first cell phone I had it was called a bag phone and it weighed about five pounds. It had to remain plugged into the lighter in my mommy-mobile but it was there in case I needed emergency assistance or to find out if my husband wanted something in particular for dinner when I stopped at Ukrops. Gee, portable phones have come a long way! I just read that Palm has announced it will offer Microsoft Windows Mobile software on its Treo smartphones. The phones, the first of which will be available from Verizon Wireless on its national broadband network, will permit calls, e-mail, Internet access, Office Mobile and more. I might actually like one of those if the buttons and screen are large enough for my feeble fingers and aging eyes. On another front, the federal government is considering a national all-hazards system to alert you via text message on your cell phone in the event of a disaster or attack directly affecting your area. You could receive Amber Alerts and the like on web-enabled devices. A public-warning solution such as this will require legislation to at the federal, state and local levels to create standards for interoperability as well as integrated technology so it isnt likely to be available in the very near term. This would however be a significant improvement over the 50-year-old system, developed during the cold war, which relies on radio and television broadcasts to communicate emergency news. With all the newfangled technology we have now, not many of us are carrying a portable radio in our pockets. You can bet though, that a cell phone or two and a BlackBerry device are sure to be found in just about any high-tech gals handbag! As the technologies continue to advance at a rapid pace, we are using our phones as business tools for e-mail, calendars and text messages and industry experts say it will not be long before we can use specially equipped phones instead of credit cards. Oh my, that could get us in trouble! And, frankly, as they do with most new technology, our kids are embracing new cell phone technology at a rapid pace. Today there are so many things you can do with a cell phone, I cant even keep track of them all. For example, I was recently on a business trip and the mobile phone for one member of the team was constantly sounding. Gosh, I thought, he is certainly a busy man, and then I found out that he was receiving stats on a sporting event! And though I havent personally witnessed this, I understand that downloading images of Playmates on cell phones is the latest fad in 17 countries. Playboy has announced plans to develop adult-theme games and ring tones for cell phones in the U.S. Oh great; yet another distraction for every prepubescent boy and many of my male coworkers. As with every technology come the associated risks such as hackers targeting the data on our mobile devices and creating malicious software specifically designed to exploit all of those innovative features! The Trusted Computing Group (TCG) has developed hardware-based standards for mobile devices, to thwart criminals and to provide greater control by cell phone operators. Although hardware-based security is not new to the industry, manufacturers have yet to standardize, which keeps costs higher for everyone. In addition, several manufacturers have created cell phones designed specifically for younger kids, which include many parental control features, simple buttons, flashy designs and limits on permissions for incoming and outgoing calls. If you have a young child who needs a cell phone, consider the TicTalk by Enfora or the Firefly by Firefly Mobile. However for teenagers (and possibly those in a corporate environment) there is another solution on the horizon. RuleSpace has developed a parental control solution for mobile providers that rates mobile content on the fly. Mobile operators can offer subscribers the ability to block inappropriate content from web-enabled devices. In other words, Johnny cant look at porn and staff can keep focused on the work at hand! James Dirksen, vice president of operations for RuleSpace, said, The biggest difference between the traditional Internet and the mobile web is the size of the content. The technology weve developed is capable of recognizing inappropriate content based on a much smaller message that is going to a cell phone versus a PC. So despite the fact that with every emerging technology there is a corresponding threat, we can be thankful that there are an equal number of technologists working hard to combat those threats. If we could put our techno-teenagers to work developing technological solutions, we would have a real home run and could all be notified of it on our mobile devices! Ring-beep you have web-mail! New Year Resolutions - Diets and What Goes Wrong

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

By Mary Leahy Three, two onecorks popping, fireworks going off, people singing Auld Lang Syne, while others are making vows to stop eating chocolate, drinking and so on. Every year people make their New Years resolutions and a lot consists of wanting to lose those extra pounds. Especially, now the Christmas season has passed and you have accumulated even extra pounds to shed, by starting that healthy lifestyle or joining a gym. But after a short while all these good intentions go out the window. Why does this happen? Most times these resolutions just have not been thought through properly. These are spur of the moment or even desperate measures, that you think are going to get the extra weight off and you back into a healthy lifestyle. You may decide for the month of January, you will avoid alcohol, chocolates and start back at the gym, running again or adding some kind of exercise back to your daily routine. And yes, you may stick with this for the month, however, there are eleven more months in the year. What happens with these? Slowly you start going back to your old habits, going out with friends as you can go to the gym tomorrow, but tomorrow brings something else and so the old routine starts again. I am not saying that you have to give up going out with friends or never having chocolate again, but to lose those extra pounds you need to take a look at your established eating habits and lifestyle, then make the necessary changes to get the desired results. You may want to think about what you want to change and how much weight you want to lose and set reasonable goals. You can not expect to lose weight quickly and keep it off. It has to be gradual for it to work effectively. Fad diets or extreme measures such as, avoiding temptation by avoiding going out, will only lead to you craving these items more and being unhappy with yourself when you do not achieve your wish. What is the most effective way to control your weight but not have to starve yourself or avoid the foods you love? Being healthy should not interfere with your social life to the point that you stay home being miserable rather than going out with friends. I dont know about you but I am tired of turning on the television and all the commercials going on about what we should eat, or about how to control our weight by joining this program or that. Or seeing the headlines about this star or that who claims they have the secret to keeping thin by…What do we follow? Which program do we buy into? Whos detox or diet book should we follow? The one who has the higher advertising budget, so we see it more often? Where do we turn for help? One of the best programs I have found is the one that explains how the body functions and what to do to keep it healthy. Understanding how our body works and how it uses food and in what combinations will help you understand and control your weight. Learning which foods to eat that will help you lose weight and which ones that cause weight gain will help you achieve your goal of losing weight and having a healthier lifestyle. A good program which explains not only the different food groups and the correct combination to eat them in, it also explains the importance of portion size and this can be found at http://www.mnb-weightlossprogram.com. She also lived overseas working in a multi-national hospital along side a variety of multi-national staff members. She had the opportunity to observe and study a variety of cultures and their eating habits. With the help of her husband they came up with this healthy eating program designed to help you understand food, lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. http://www.mnb-weightlossprogram.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Mary_Leahy http://EzineArticles.com/?New-Year-Resolutions—Diets-and-What-Goes-Wrong&id=420746 fair credit reporting act information how to clean up your credit report improving my credit score fixing credit

The P Value And Its Significance

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Quoc_Nguyen] Quoc Nguyen When diversifying an investment portfolio, one needs to consider investing in the healthcare industries. Pharmaceutical companies that have strong pipelines of investigation drugs have strong growth speculations. In addition to examining its pipelines, one also needs to be able to evaluate the results of its clinical trials. When a news program reports the results of a clinical trial for a new drug to be statistically significant, what does it mean? And how did they come up with that conclusion? One of the most important values to look for when interpreting the results of a study is the P value. Elenbaas et al defines P value as the probability that a type I error has been committed, and that the null hypothesis has been falsely rejected. Lets briefly talk about the null hypothesis, type I error, and type II error. Lets say a new drug A is being compared to a currently available drug B. The first assumption that investigators will make is that the new drug A is equivalent or is equal in efficacy to the currently available drug B. This assumption is called the null hypothesis (H0). A contradicting assumption to the null hypothesis is the alternative hypothesis (H1). H1 says that the new drug A is more effective than the currently available drug B. In fact, the alternative hypothesis (H1) is what the investigators want to prove because the pharmaceutical companies developing the new drugs fund most of its clinical trials. Type I error occurs when H0 is rejected when it is really true. In other words, investigators believe that the new drug A is more effective than the currently available drug B (rejecting H0), when drug A is equal in efficacy to drug B, or worst, not as effective as drug B. Type II error occurs when H1 is actually true (drug A is more effective than drug B), but the investigators failed to reject H0 (did not reject the hypothesis that drug A is equal in efficacy as drug B). With the technical terminologies defined, lets go back to the P value. To reiterate, P value is the probability that a type I error has been committed, and that the null hypothesis has been falsely rejected. (Elenbass et al). The P value is said to be statistically significant when it is < 0.05. For example, a clinical trial comparing the effectiveness between drug A and drug B, found that drug A worked better at lowering the blood pressure than drug B, and the P value was calculated to be 0.04. This means that there is a 4% chance that a type I error is being committed (investigators falsely believe that drug A is more effective than drug B, when they are equal in efficacy). 0.05 is the largest acceptable P value in clinical literature. When investigators claim that drug A is more effective than drug B, they were correct 95% of the time, with only less than 5% chance error. There are many other important statistical values, but they are beyond the scope of this article. Now, whenever a reporter on television reports the results of a clinical trial for a new drug to be statistically significant, one can perform their own verification by obtaining a copy of that study and look for the P value. The Root Canal Bacteria, Dental Infection Bacteria Often Attacked The Heart and Circulatory System

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

By George Meinig Sixteen heart and other circulatory disease conditionswere mentioned as disease problems which can occur aseffect to the presence of root canal filled teeth. Such a large number of different heart involvementconditions is surprising as during World War I it wasdisclosed that 10 to 11 percent of all deaths inUnited States and England were due to heart involve-ment, and at that time most cases involved the heartvalves. During that period most doctors believed these heartcases were caused by streptococcus infections and that this organism species was involved in 90 percentof such cases. The major cause for infective endo-carditis according to the Mayo Clinic Health Letter in1986 was the streptococcus veridans family of bacteria -the very same one Dr. Price found most often araisingfrom infected teeth. The number of deaths from heart disease has increased from 10 percent during Dr. Price’s time to over 50 percent of all deaths today. In view of Dr. Price’sdisclosures about the relationship of root canaltherapy to the high number of heart cases and otherdegenerative diseases related to endodontic treatment, the time is overdue for the dental profession to reassess its role in the occurrence of these diseases. A good example of the seriousness of this enquirycan be seen in the endocarditis case of nine yearold girl. She had been bedridden for five of hernine years. A culture made from her two infected baby teeth was injected into the ear veins of three rabbits, each of which developed endocarditis and myocarditis, and one of them also developed rheumatism. One of therabbits developed the largest heart ever seen in arabbit. Number of other heart conditions were covered in thischapter. Many of the cases proved difficult to classifyas the patients were suffering from several organor tissue disturbances all at the same time. Investigations revealed that in a good number of thesecases patients made substantial recoveries when rootcanal filled teeth were removed!!!! Phlebitis cases were few in number, but the infectionof a culture from a woman patient with phlebitis caused a rabbit’s ear to swell 10 to 20 times thethickness it had been. In addition, the rabbit developedan acute gall bladder disturbance, multiple ulsers, andinfections of the walls of the blood vessels. The case discussed and shown are only a small percentageof heart and circulation cases presented in the two Dr.Price books, but they are representative. Why these focal infection cases clear up and don’t justcontinue on after the infected tooth or teeth are removed is a question often asked.Undoubtedly, when the condition has persisted for a longperiod, healing is not fully possible, but it is the getting rid of the continual outpouring of bacteria andtheir toxins from the infected teeth which enables thebody’s immune system to get rid of the infection at thefocal infection site and allows the body to heal itself. How to Choose the Right Online University

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By Mansi Aggarwal Formal education is getting very important in todays competitive world. Proper education and reputed college degree can help one grab better job opportunities and demand higher salary from employers. But owing to certain circumstances or due to lack of funds one is usually restrained from getting a college degree. Online universities present a lucrative option for people with time constraints. Amount of benefits achieved from completing online courses greatly depend on the reputation of the online university. An erroneous choice of online training institute results in your wasting precious time and invaluable money. Hence it is very important to choose a competent university that provides maximum knowledge with minimum cost and time involvement. Factors governing the choice for online institution of higher education are- Accreditation of institute Genuine accreditation of institute is a prime factor while determining its creditability. Being accredited from regional authorities renders universities a higher reputation. Students graduating from these places stand a better chance to obtain higher salaries and better jobs. Also eligibility towards student loan gets higher if concerned authority accredits the enrolled institution. Inter course student loan transfers are possible for transfers within similar regional universities. Research the quality and relevance of course offered Learning anything that is irrelevant in todays scenario would result in useless accumulation of knowledge that does not turn to be fruitful. An enquiry about the universitys capability of adaptation towards changing technologies is important. Analyzing the syllabus offered by proposed university by comparing it with other online institutes presenting similar coaching would help determine whether the curriculum is exhaustive or not. An examination about the course being suitable to ones capabilities and interests is again very important. Cost involved Online universities offer personalized education program for adult learners. Hence at times they might occur to be more costly. A considerably low fee charged by online university is a matter of concern as that may be due to low quality education imparted by them. Untalented faculty members are available at low costs and that may be a reason behind reduced fee structure. Sometimes even if the cost of education is higher it is worth the effort as availing student loans is easy. Expected increase in money earned after completion of the course would help repay the loan amount. Admission requirements Formalities and academic qualification that are essential to enroll for a particular course are indicative of the universities standard of education. Imparting admission only on the basis of money payment capacity should lower the credibility of the university. As certain minimum academic qualification must be mandatory prior to enroll for graduate courses. Not having any such restrictions results in accumulation of unworthy students who would latter be ones fellow mates. Investigate the faculty and alumni Enquiry about the faculties, educational qualifications are indicative of the online universities competence to impart training. Also the university must have technological infrastructure to carry out the distance-learning program. Usually Students are required to log in for minimum number of times during the week. Although timings for logging can be adjusted in accordance with ones comfort. Mansi aggarwal writes about online university. Super Bubble Recipes - Become an Expert “Bubbleologist”

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By Patricia Jensen So, you want to become an expert “bubbleologist”? These super bubble recipes and homemade bubble wands will make you an expert at creating big, beautiful bubbles. A great activity for kids parties or anytime. Bubble solutions contain a few simple ingredients which can be found at home or in your local supermarket or pharmacy. You will need liquid dishwashing detergent. The more expensive ones like Joy or Dawn work best. Mix with water then add either light corn syrup or glycerin. Glycerin is preferable because it makes stronger bubbles and doesn’t attract flying insects like the sweet syrup will. The majority of bubble solutions will include these three ingredients in varying amounts. Experiment during your play time to see what works best for you. Weather conditions and other factors also play a role in the success of your bubble-making. When you have perfected your very own bubble blend, you can add tempera paint or food coloring for more colorful bubbles, if desired. These are best used outside as staining is possible. Here are a few bubble recipes to get you going: Basic Bubbles I cup Joy or Dawn dishwashing detergent 4 cups water 3 to 4 tblsps. glycerin Basic Bubbles II 1 cup dishwashing Joy or Dawn detergent 1 gallon water 1 tblsps. glycerin Basic Bubbles III 1/4 cup liquid Joy or Dawn dishwashing detergent 3/4 cup water 1 tablespoons light corn syrup BEST BUBBLE WANDS Try these easy innovative bubble wands for more bubble-making fun. B-to-B Business Owners: Measure Your Marketing for Success

Monday, April 14th, 2008

By Susan Tatum The best way to ensure you get stellar results from your marketing is one that is overlooked surprisingly often: measure! When you first launch a marketing program, you may have to start by measuring activities, but eventually youll be able to measure results. Most importantly and this is where a lot of measurement efforts fail — you can measure progress against your plan. Here are a few guidelines to help you get started or to assess your current measuring system: Keep it simple collect only data youll actually act on. With applications such as CRMs and web analytic programs, its easy to measure more than you really need to know. Just ask yourself this question: What will I do with this information? Make sure the data is collected in the same way all the time. If youre trying to spot a trend, consistency is often more important than accuracy. Look at the findings regularly and share it with others. Theres nothing like a little visibility to make sure things stay on track. Integrate your marketing measurements with measurements for sales, customer service and any other client-facing groups. This will allow you to see how well the entire process is working. What should you measure? While marketing analytics can get very complex, especially for large, multi-national, multi-business firms, you can accomplish a lot by just tracking some combination of the following:In-bound inquiries. How many new inquiries has marketing generated this month (or week) and over the last 12 months (or year-to-date). Qualified Leads. How many of these inquiries are actually real prospects? Sources of leads. How many leads have come from each of your major sources: teleprospecting, direct mail, email campaigns, networking, referrals, online or offline advertising, public relations, search engines, events. At what cost? Qualified opportunities. How many real sales opportunities are currently in the pipeline. How many were generated by marketing? How does this compare to the number and value you expected to have? Progress against your marketing implementation plan. Have you and your marketing people completed the activities you committed to complete? General website traffic. What is the trend for the number of people visiting your site? Where are they coming from? What percentage sign up for your newsletter or to download information? How often should you review your measurements? For a high-level strategic view of marketing progress, a monthly review will give you a good picture. To actually manage a marketing effort on a tactical level, a weekly review of the data is better. Charts and graphs are generally better than words and numbers simply because research shows that people absorb information from the former faster than from the latter. Two secrets to making measurements work: Secret #1: Continuously compare whats really happening to what your marketing plan says should be happening. For example, its good to know that youve generated 150 qualified leads so far this year. Its far better to know that, according to your plan, you should have generated 200 leads by now. Secret #2: When you review the reports whether monthly or weekly act on the information! Make decisions. Redeploy resources. Change your approach. Whatever it takes to get and stay on track. In summary Those of you who are already well into a good system of measuring and reporting on a complex marketing operation are likely to tell me Ive oversimplified things here. And maybe youre right. There are loads of other important bits of information that are good to know and watch. The point I want to make is: you dont have to do it all in order to get a benefit. Immigration Law - Concerning Foreigners’ Entry into Country

Friday, April 11th, 2008

By Somdev Mukherjee Migration of human beings from one place to another has been there since prehistoric times. It is the migration or movement of people from one nation-state to another in recent times that is referred to as immigration. The people move to a place of which they are not citizens. It may be noted that it is the long term permanent residence in a foreign country often leading to finally acquiring of citizenship that is called immigration. Tourists and short term visitors are not called immigrants though seasonal labor migrants for periods usually of less than a year may be looked upon as immigrants. The immigration law refers to the policies of the national government relating to the controlling of the phenomenon of immigration to the country concerned. The nationality law concerning the legal status of the people in a country in question with regard to citizenship etc. closely associated with the immigration laws. Thus, immigration laws not only vary from country to country but also according to the political climate and policies being pursued from time to time. With regard to immigration there are many countries that have strict laws. Such laws relate to the regulation of entry of foreigners into the country, right to work in there, participate in government of the country and such other aspects. Most of the countries however have laws that specify a process of naturalization for immigrants to become citizens over a period. The immigration policy of a country is also closely associated with the immigration laws. These can range from isolationism wherein no migration is allowed at all to free immigration where there is permission granted for most forms of migration. In the US immigration has acted as a major source of population growth and has also played a crucial role in bringing about cultural change over a period. There are economic, social and political aspects of immigration. This has the potential to give rise to controversy about race, ethnicity, religion, economic benefits, job growth, settlement patterns, and impact on upward social mobility, levels of criminality, nationalities, political loyalties, moral values and work habits. The US of the day is the one country that accepts more legal immigrants as permanent residents than the rest of the world combined. When Following Your Heart, Don’t Leave Your Brain Behind!

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By Janet Bush There is no doubt that we form rapid first impressions of others, and that these impressions are persistent and often tell us something valid about the objects of our perceptions. There is no shortage of pop psychologists and other advice-givers eager to tell us to go with our guts and stick with those first impressions. There are, however, some rather obvious and significant disadvantages to doing only that. For one thing, going simply with our first gut impressions encourages us to act upon our prejudices and stereotypical assumptions and expectations regarding others, and to do so uncritically. Second, while our gut instincts are of unquestionable value, so also is our capacity for careful rational balanced thinking. Going beyond first impressions and thinking carefully before making lasting judgments about other people is also an invaluable and evolutionarily essential skill. We make the best possible judgments about others when we utilize all our resources and faculties appropriately, instinctual responses as well as later-evolved cognitive processes. It may be a little harder to do this and to get beyond the surface when meeting other people, but it’s well worth it in the long run! So, what about those initial heart palpitations? What do they mean? Yep, those initial butterfly stages of love and/or infatuation are unmistakable: rapid heartbeat, not much need for sleep, a constant upbeat mood and outlook, and a seemingly undying love and desire for the object of our affection. These are moments that are played over and over again in our minds day and night and are the subject of countless love poems. Nothing ever seems to be less than perfect and you just know your new boyfriend or girlfriend feels the same way about you, too adrift in love! You two may talk and laugh for hours into the wee hours of the night about all kinds of things just to wake up in the same bewitching love-fog and repeat it all, and again and again. Then gradually, usually after two or three months, thing seem a little different, a little more difficult and a little more forced. For the first time you may even question your own feelings for your Prince Charming or he for you, and confusion and lots of questions stream into your consciousness. Some people bolt about this time, only to repeat another chapter of the same book with a new love and have many serially-monogamous, yet brief, relationships over the course of their lifetimes. Whats going on, anyhow? Stage One - the giddy stage of new love described above - is a time when we our bodies are pumping out large amounts of love-locking chemicals that keep both our love interest and energy level/libido strong. Stage Two of dating can seem like a cruel twist, and is often referred to as the uncertain phase. During this period, lovers regain their logic and actually start to think again! They start to focus more on their partners true traits rather than their fantasy ones, and, if they dont become too disenchanted and leave, start to size their boyfriend/girlfriend up as a suitable exclusive partner. It takes time to really get to know someone and Stage Two cant be pushed, hurried, or ignored. Many couples who marry in Phase One during a weekend in Las Vegas return a second time to untie the knot once theyre out of the fog. (What was I thinking may be their new mantra!) Unfortunately, many singles become confused during Phase Two, thinking that Phase One should last forever and that they must not have met the right person yet. They may even sabotage the relationship and/or leave before giving the relationship a chance. Phase Two is an extremely important phase and, while not as fun as Phase One, is necessary before longterm commitments should be made to ensure compatibility in all the right ways. In Phase One, you probably just assume you both like the same kind of vacations, both want those two kids and a white picket fence, and of course, Christmas with your side of the family! Take time to slowly get to know each other. The rewards are great!
